The Geek Code Of Honor
As geeks, nerds, and the technologically elite I believe that we have all been striving towards many of the same ideals, but without putting those ideals into words. In truth, without words it is easy to stray from what we believe, and so I offer these seven precepts in hopes that we will all be guided towards a greater path:
- As we work the great deeds that will shape the future, we will strive to be right in both principle and practice, for wrongs committed now will corrupt the days to come, and just actions now will guide the world towards a just future.
- Courageous of heart, we will not let unjust actions go unchallenged. Those who steal passwords, create virii, and seek the destruction of the technological shall find us steadfast at the gates. We must defend the world from chaos, corruption, and destruction for now we are the best suited.
- With our knowledge and skills we will strive to aid the world, for the world is changing. Once the sword and the shield shaped all things human, but now the program and the data-stream move humanity to the future. It is our duty as the most skilled to aid all others.
- We will strive to not openly shame others, for in doing so we damage both them and ourselves. However, neither we will we allow others to continue to commit shameful acts, for shameful acts harm both society and the perpetrators. The shameful and the wayward need our guidance and it is our duty as leaders to offer it in both gentle and stern ways. As the wonders of technology increase, the borders between individual minds decrease. There must be great care taken to be respectful of each other, or there will be chaos.
- We will not hide who we are, what we do, or what we desire. In honesty and light we can be free of rumor and shadow. Since we do not hide, we cannot be exposed. No greater injury can come in the technological age than to have our secrets revealed, and so if we strive to have no secrets we can only become stronger.
- We will strive to take no action that shames ourselves. We can only be honored if we work in honorable ways. In this age of technology those with skill and knowledge have great power. The temptation to use that power in ways that would harm others only to benefit ourselves is great. We must always resist the easy, yet dishonorable choices we could make.
- We are all as one and so another's need is our own. We will respond to calls for aid or knowledge. As one we are a great force. Loyalty to each other will bind us together and keep us from drifting from the path. Each of us possessing but a portion of the map and the compass we must guide each other.
